Ready for winter? 7 tips to help you prepare

December 20th, 2015 by Lilian Radke

As the temperatures begin to drop and the impending snowfall looms in the not so distant future, this is the perfect time to review your plan to keep your facility clean and healthy during the toughest months of the year.

  1. Keep your vacuum nearby – Carpets are your best defense against winter weather. They keep sand, rock salt and other contaminants from spreading throughout your facility. Frequent vacuuming of carpets will keep your entryway looking pristine.
  2. Deep clean – Floors and door mats take a real beating this time of year. Consult with your janitorial service to establish a plan of attack for keeping these spots clean.
  3. Use the “Rule of 15” – Floor mats are most effective when there is 5 feet of mat outside the building, 5 feet in the doorway and an additional 5 feet to catch any lingering winter mess. Mats also help reduce slip and falls from wet conditions. The best way to reduce cleaning costs is to prevent dirt from entering a facility.
  4. Change HVAC filters – This is a great time to check that your systems are in good working order. Changing the filters can reduce energy usage and extend the life of units while allowing for cleaner air.
  5. Seal exterior doors and windows – Keep water from melting ice outside of your building by checking that flexible caulking is intact. Weather stripping door frames also helps protect your building and cut down on heating costs.
  6. Keep employees healthy – Keep flu and other germs from spreading around the office by using disinfectants on door handles, keyboards, and work surfaces. Talk with your commercial cleaning company about what types of disinfectants they use and if they take special steps during the winter to help ward off germs.
  7. Post signs – No one wants an accident to happen. Look out for people entering the building by posting wet floor signs when needed. This will warn then of any potentially dangerous areas.
